We Took a Custom 300 PRC From Snowy Mountain Rifles Out to a Mile

We didn't go into this one with a script. Snowy Mountain Rifles sent us a custom 300 PRC built under their Long-Range Hunter Pro line, and we wanted to see exactly what it could do. So we grabbed a chronograph, set up on our known-distance range, and started stretching it out: 600, 800, 1,200, 1,500 yards, and eventually a full mile.

Here's how the day played out, what we learned about trueing our data mid-session, and what it took to connect at 1,760 yards.

The Rifle: A Custom 300 PRC From Snowy Mountain

This build came in under Snowy Mountain's Long-Range Hunter Pro category, though it doesn't fit the mold exactly. Most Long-Range Hunter Pro rifles run a carbon-wrapped barrel, and this one doesn't. It's also a bit heavier than a typical build in that line.

A few things stood out right away:

  1. Stock: A Manners stock with a thumb rest that naturally puts your hand into a proper grip. It's a feature we've liked on other rifles too.
  2. Action: Smooth, described best as "like butter." It only took about five rounds to get the rifle zeroed.
  3. Optic: Zeiss S3, first focal plane, with a double-stack elevation turret. On the second revolution, the second stack of etching shows exact elevation without any extra math.
  4. Suppressor: A Dead Air suppressor in the "L" (long) configuration, which knocked the sound down significantly.
  5. Ammo: Federal Premium Terminal Ascent, 210 grain, a proven hunting bullet with a strong ballistic coefficient.

Step 1: Zeroing and a Sub-Half-MOA Group at 100 Yards

After confirming zero, we ran a three-round group to see what the rifle could actually do. The first group had one flyer we couldn't fully explain, so we let the barrel cool, made a small windage and elevation adjustment, and ran it again.

The second group landed inside a one-inch square at 100 yards. Once measured edge to edge, it came out to 0.58 MOA, a strong result straight out of the box with factory ammunition.

Step 2: Trueing the Data Before Stretching Out

Before pushing distance, we ran into a common long-range problem: our stored muzzle velocity didn't match reality. The rifle was dialed in at 2,860 fps, but the chronograph showed an actual average of 2,932 fps.

That 72 fps difference was enough to put us about three-quarters of a minute high at 600 yards. Updating the muzzle velocity in the ballistic app immediately fixed the elevation call. It's a good reminder that even a well-built rifle will shoot off if the data behind it is stale. (Always update your data)

Step 3: First-Round Hits at 600, 800, and 1,200 Yards

With true data in the system, we moved through distance one target at a time:

  1. 600 yards: Elevation confirmed after the muzzle velocity correction, with a wind hold of 2 minutes.
  2. 800 yards: Dialed 17 minutes of elevation, held 5 minutes of wind, and landed a hit close to center.
  3. 1,200 yards: Dialed 31.25 minutes of elevation and held 10 minutes of wind for a right-edge hit, confirmed low by about half a minute from the spotter.

Step 4: 1,500 Yards and a Change in Wind Angle

At 1,500 yards, the shot angle changed from due east to more of a southeast line, which meant the wind call had to change too. Rather than re-figuring everything from scratch, GeoBallistics let us plug in the known wind hold from 1,200 yards, adjust for the new angle, and calculate a fresh wind value for the new distance.

That gave a hold of roughly 8 minutes of wind and 47.25 minutes of elevation. First round sent, first round hit.

Step 5: The Push to a Mile

The mile target sat back in the trees with brush grown up in front of it, making wind reads and misses tougher to judge by eye. The first attempt came up short after an elevation mistake (the ballistic app called for 65.1 minutes, (but someone forgot to make the correction on the elevation dial). After correcting elevation to the full 65 minutes of dialed elevation on the Zeiss S3, without ever needing to hold over in the reticle, the next rounds started closing in.

Wind at a mile turned out to be the real challenge. The wind sock barely moved, but the correct hold turned out to be far more than it looked, starting around 8 minutes and eventually needing a full 14 minutes of wind to connect. A big, decisive move into the wind is what finally got a hit at 1,760 yards.

Final Thoughts

This rifle did everything we asked of it, and it did it with factory ammunition rather than a hand-loaded match round. There isn't anything in North America you couldn't hunt with a 300 PRC built like this one, and the accuracy it showed at 100 yards carried all the way out to a mile once the data was trued up.

On a personal note, this video came together the same week Greg became a grandpa. His daughter Madison welcomed the family's first grandson, and there's a good chance he'll show up behind the rifle with us before long.

What magnification is best for shooting out to 1 mile? Extreme magnification isn't actually required. Many top long-range competitors make first-round hits at a mile or more using 12 to 20x magnification, and some have hit targets out to 1.5 miles at 9x under good conditions. Magnification mostly helps with spotting impacts and reading the target. Dialed elevation and a correct wind call matter far more than how zoomed in the scope is.

How much elevation (MOA) does it take to hit a target at 1 mile? It depends on the cartridge and load, but most magnum long-range setups need somewhere in the range of 50 to 70 MOA of elevation to reach a mile. In this test, a 300 PRC shooting Federal Terminal Ascent 210-grain ammunition needed the full 65 minutes of elevation dialed on a Zeiss S3, with no reticle holdover required.

How much wind hold does it take to shoot a mile? Wind is usually the harder problem to solve at a mile, more than elevation. Even a light, steady-looking wind can require 10 to 15-plus minutes of hold at that distance, and the correct number is rarely obvious just from a wind sock or the grass. In this test, the wind hold at a mile started around 8 minutes and ended up needing a full 14 minutes to connect, despite conditions looking calm.
