Most hunters test their sub-MOA claims from a bench with a heavy rest, but that same rifle and shooter combination often opens up to 2 MOA or more once you stand up, get on shooting sticks, and add wind. Your rifle's accuracy and your accuracy in the field are two different numbers, and only one of them matters when you're looking through a scope at an animal.
We hear it constantly. Hunters love to say their rifle shoots sub-MOA. And for most of us, that claim is true, at least under the right conditions. We get on a sturdy bench, load up a heavy front bag and a rear bag, get completely locked in, and with a decent rifle, good ammo, and a clean trigger pull, sub-MOA is a realistic result. But how often do hunters actually get to take a shot at an elk, a deer, or an antelope from that same sturdy bench with a heavy bag underneath the rifle? Almost never.
To find out what really happens, we ran a simple side by side test at the Cross Bell Ranch range house in Copan, Oklahoma. The rifle was a Benelli Lupo in 6.5 Creedmoor, topped with a Zeiss Conquest V4 6-24x scope, the same setup we use in our long range classes, suppressed with a Dead Air Nomad, and loaded with Federal Premium Gold Medal Center Strike ammunition. First we shot a three round group from the bench at 100 yards. It came in right around three quarters of an inch, a legitimate sub-MOA group, even with a stiff Oklahoma wind working against us.
Then we set the bench aside and grabbed a set of shooting sticks. Standing, freehand, in the same wind, we shot another three round group at 100 yards. The elevation held up reasonably well, but the group opened up to right around 2 MOA, nearly three times larger than the bench group, from the same rifle, same ammo, same shooter, in the same conditions. That gap is the whole point. The rifle did not get worse. The platform did.
From there we pushed the test further out onto our steel targets, which are sized at 3 MOA, or roughly a 9 inch plate at 300 yards, which is still a realistic vital-size target. Off the sticks, in the wind, we connected at 300 yards. At 400 yards, holding what felt like enough wind, we missed twice and called it. That gave us an honest, real-world effective range for that day, in that wind, off that particular rest: 300 yards. Not the rifle's effective range on paper. The hunter's effective range in the field.
That is the real lesson here, and it applies to every hunter heading into archery or rifle season this year. A sub-MOA rifle is a great foundation, but it is not the same thing as a sub-MOA hunter. Before you head into the field, you need to know your actual capabilities from the position you are most likely to shoot from, whether that is off sticks, prone, seated with a tripod, or standing with your pack thrown down for support. If you are going on a guided hunt, call your outfitter ahead of time and ask what shooting position is most common in that terrain. Then go practice that position, not just bench sessions, so you already know your limits before an animal ever steps into range.
What is the difference between bench accuracy and field accuracy? Bench accuracy measures what your rifle and ammunition combination is capable of under ideal, fully supported conditions. Field accuracy measures what you, the shooter, can actually deliver from a realistic hunting position, often standing, kneeling, or using shooting sticks, frequently with wind and time pressure added in. The rifle's accuracy does not change between the two. The shooter's ability to control the platform does, and that is usually where the bigger group size comes from.
How much does shooting off sticks affect group size compared to a bench rest? In our test, moving from a bench rest to standing on shooting sticks took a group from roughly three quarters of an inch to about 2 MOA at 100 yards, nearly three times larger, using the same rifle, ammunition, and shooter. Every hunter's number will differ based on practice and the specific rest they use, but a noticeable jump from bench to field position is normal and expected.
What is a realistic effective hunting range for the average hunter? It depends entirely on the shooter, the rest being used, and the conditions that day. In our wind-heavy test off shooting sticks, 300 yards was a confirmed hit and 400 yards was a clean miss twice over, which made 300 yards the honest effective range for that setup on that day. The only way to know your own number is to test yourself from the position and distance you expect to encounter while hunting, not just from a bench.
How can hunters practice shooting positions they will actually use in the field? Think through the terrain and species you are hunting and identify the position you are most likely to end up in, whether that is prone, sitting with a tripod, standing on sticks, or using a pack as a rest. Then build practice sessions specifically around that position instead of only shooting from a bench.
