The Range Bag We Actually Trust: Eberlestock Bang Bang Review

By Greg Ray | Founder, Outdoor Solutions

Most range bags are glorified double duffel bags. They look fine hanging on a hook in a gear room, but put them through real daily use at a shooting range and they fall apart fast. Zippers bind up. Bottoms get soaked. Compartments collapse. I have tried a lot of them over the years and most do not survive the kind of abuse we put gear through at Outdoor Solutions.

Between our Long Range Shooting Schools and Field to Table events, we put our gear through a lot of abuse every year. Our gear takes more use in twelve months than most people put on theirs in a lifetime. When we choose a piece of gear, it has to earn its spot. We have been running Eberlestock packs in the field for years, and when they released the Bang Bang range bag, it made sense to put it to work. It has not let us down.

Here is what I carry, how I have it set up, and why this bag works for us. Note: Each one of our instructors sets their bag up differently, the Bang Bang is very modular so setting it up for your specific needs is very easy.

Why the Bang Bang Stands Out

The first thing you notice is the bottom. It is not canvas. It is a hard polycarbonate base, and that single feature puts it in a different category from everything else on the market. Set it down in the mud. Set it down on gravel. Put it in the back of your truck on a wet tailgate. It does not matter. Your gear stays dry and protected.

The zippers are heavy duty and do not bind up. The MOLLE webbing runs on all sides and gives you attachment options for whatever you need to add. The buckles are bomb proof. This bag is built the same way Eberlestock builds their packs, which is why it holds up.

How I Have Mine Set Up

Bottom Compartment

This is where I keep extra ammo, additional targets, and basic gun cleaning gear. It doubles as a secure base layer that keeps everything else elevated and organized.

Side Pockets

The Bang Bang has two end pockets with their own smaller organization slots inside. On one side I keep my Fixit Sticks range tool kit, extra rings, and assorted small tools. On the other side I carry solvents, cleaners, and gun oil. The pockets have slots sized perfectly for a Kestrel, pens, and Sharpies.

Back Panel

The back has a cinch attachment that holds a tripod. I run a lightweight Zeiss tripod back there, which I use either for my spotting scope or for my camera when I need it on the range.

Main Compartment

This is where everything important lives. The main compartment uses movable padded dividers that you can reconfigure or remove entirely to create one large open space. I pulled most of mine out on one side to fit my Zeiss spotting scope, which fits cleanly in the bag with room to spare.

Current main compartment loadout:

Zeiss spotting scope, Garmin chronograph, Longshot range camera for checking targets and filming through the spotting scope, calipers, bubble levels, hearing protection, and lens wipes in the small lid pocket.

The Longshot is a newer addition and has been useful both for checking groupings at distance and for filming through the scope on the range.

Who This Bag Works For

Most of our clients at Outdoor Solutions are hunters preparing for a specific hunt, competitive shooters getting ready for a match, or enthusiasts who want to shoot at a high level. This bag works equally well for all of them. It also works just as well if you are a pistol shooter who never touches a rifle. The layout and storage options are flexible enough to fit whatever your range kit looks like.

If you are hauling gear to the range regularly and you are tired of bags that do not hold up, the Bang Bang is worth the investment.

Eberlestock Builds Gear That Lasts

Eberlestock is known for their packs and backpacks, and that reputation is well earned. We run their packs in the field and I have a video coming up where I put about 90 miles on their MOD system in one month. The Bang Bang carries that same build quality into a compact, purpose-built range bag. That is not common in this category.

You can find the Bang Bang at eberlestock.com. Search Bang Bang in their range bag section and it will come right up.
